by March 13, 2025

On Saturday, March 15, The University of the West Indies (The UWI) will host an official installation ceremony for Dr. the Most Honourable Dodridge Miller, commemorating his transition into the prestigious role of the seventh Chancellor in the University’s history. Approximately 300 invitees are expected to attend, including prime ministers, governors-general from across the region, governmental representatives, university leaders, business executives, and members of civil society. This gathering will bring together distinguished individuals from both the regional and international levels. The ceremony will take place at the Cave Hill Campus in Barbados and will be broadcast live via UWItv from 6:00 PM (Eastern Caribbean).

The Chancellor’s Installation Ceremony is a university tradition that signifies the transition of leadership within the institution. Highlighting the cultural significance of the event, the cricket-themed ceremony, chosen by Chancellor Miller, will reflect his passion for the sport and the rich regional identity of the university—an exceptional blend of tradition and Caribbean culture.

The celebration will begin with traditional academic and chancellor processions, followed by introductory remarks from the University Registrar and a formal announcement of the ceremony’s purpose by the Vice-Chancellor.
Dr. Miller will express his commitment to promoting the well-being of the university and its members through an official declaration.

The ceremony will include a symbolic robed event, during which Dr. Miller will be attired by the Presidents of the Student Guild Councils from various campuses and capped with a Tudor bonnet—a symbol of knowledge and wisdom—by a representative of the Campus Principals. The Vice-Chancellor will then present the ceremonial mace, marking the official investiture of the new Chancellor.

A distinguished graduate of The UWI, Chancellor Miller boasts over 30 years of leadership experience across the banking, insurance, and financial services sectors, having served as the Group President and CEO of Sagicor Financial Company until his retirement in March 2023. He is recognised as a true Caribbean luminary dedicated to the advancement of the region.

Previous Chancellors of The University of the West Indies include notable figures such as Her Royal Highness the Princess Alice, Countess of Athlone; Sir Hugh Wooding; Sir Allen Lewis; Sir Shridath Ramphal; Professor Sir George Alleyne; and Robert Bermudez.
