The UWI Investigates Cybersecurity Alert; No Confirmed Impact to Systems or Data
The UWI Regional Headquarters, Jamaica W.I., Wednesday, August 19, 2026—The University of the West Indies (The UWI) has received an alert regarding a potential cybersecurity issue involving ransomware claims. At this time, there is no confirmed evidence of a breach of our IT environment, systems, or any leaked University information.
As a precaution, we are treating this matter with utmost seriousness. Our incident response plan is active, and we are working with cybersecurity experts and regional authorities. Technical teams across the University are investigating, reviewing systems, checking for indicators of compromise, and confirming our readiness.
We urge all members of the University community to remain vigilant, avoid clicking on suspicious links or attachments, and promptly report any unusual system activity or suspicious messages to their campus IT Helpdesk.
We recognise that such reports may cause concern among staff, students, alumni, and other stakeholders.
