The St. Augustine Campus is pleased to announce Dr Sandra Sookram as the new Director of the Sir Arthur Lewis Institute of Social and Economic Studies (SALISES).
Dr Sookram, is a distinguished economist who holds a B.Sc., M.Phil., and Ph.D. in Economics from The University of the West Indies. She has served as a Senior Lecturer in Economics at the School of Business and Management at the Five Islands Campus; and the Deputy Governor (Monetary Operations and Policy) at the Central Bank of Trinidad and Tobago, overseeing departments such as Banking Operations, Reserves and Domestic Market Management, Research, and Information Services. Dr Sookram has held the position of Deputy Chairman of the North Central Regional Health Authority Board and was also a Fellow at the Sir Arthur Lewis Institute of Social and Economic Studies (SALISES) at The UWI, St. Augustine.
Her contributions to the field of economics include extensive research which has been published in reputable journals and book chapters. In addition to which she has played an important role in mentoring students at the M.Sc., M.Phil. and Ph.D. levels.
Dr Sookram has received many awards for her work including The UWI Vice Chancellor’s ’60 under 60′; and 70+ Outstanding UWI Women for Research. Internationally, she has been honored with a British Academy Fellowship, supporting her research on poverty and welfare. She has collaborated with several international agencies, to address critical research areas which are pertinent to the Caribbean region.
