UWI gathers the best and brightest in AI for the Caribbean’s first AI conference

From July 8-10, 2024, The University of the West Indies (The UWI) will host the Caribbean’s first AI conference.

The regional University is bringing together the brightest minds from the region and beyond to delve into the transformative potential of artificial intelligence (AI) and digital transformation opportunities and challenges for the Caribbean.

Themed ‘Reimagining the Digital Transformation of the Caribbean in an Age of Regenerative AI and the Fifth Industrial Revolution’, this landmark event takes place at The UWI’s Five Islands Campus in Antigua & Barbuda, offering both physical attendance and virtual participation options. The Conference aims to explore adoption strategies, risks, and ethical considerations related to AI, specifically within the Caribbean context. Anticipated attendees include AI experts, policymakers, government officials, academics, and business leaders.

An impressive lineup of 80 international and regional speakers, 40 academic paper presentations and over 20 sessions includes UWI academics and subject matter experts, regional business leaders and executives, and global affiliates from Meta, Google, UNESCO GlaxoSmithKline Harvard University, IBM and more.

Daren Dhoray, Enterprise Applications Support Manager at The UWI St Augustine Campus, is scheduled to present an academic paper entitled: Transforming university websites – AI Enhanced Interactivity for Personalized Student Engagement. He affirmed that this inaugural AI conference marks a pivotal moment in The UWI’s history, “Though smaller in scale than global giants, we are uniquely positioned to harness AI for sustainable development and social good.”

He added, “The conference is not just timely; it is a beacon for educators, policymakers, and change makers. We are here to catalyze change and build a network of AI-savvy leaders who will steer our region into a future where technology empowers and elevates.
