by December 16, 2024

The UWI’s Cave Hill Campus received high praise for its pioneering role when Barbados unveiled the world’s first vehicle powered by renewable natural gas (RNG) from Sargassum seaweed, rum distillery wastewater, and Blackbelly sheep manure on September 17, 2024.

Senator the Hon. Lisa Cummins, Barbados’ Minister of Energy and Business praised the university for its pioneering efforts and emphasized the importance of diversifying investments in renewable energy beyond traditional solar power. She highlighted the opportunity to transform Sargassum into a valuable resource for Barbados’ renewable energy transition.

The project is the result of extensive research conducted by scientists at The UWI Cave Hill, in collaboration with Rum and Sargassum Inc. and Supernova Lab of Future Barbados. The vehicle was enthusiastically received, receiving applause as it made its debut drive at Guinea Plantation in St. John.

The car, now the flagship vehicle for the Caribbean Centre for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (CCREE), features the branding “Runs on Sargassum” on its trunk.

Minister Cummins called for this breakthrough to be recognized as a national achievement and a model for innovation both regionally and globally. She stressed that this development showcases Barbados and The UWI’s ability to lead in the renewable energy sector and should not be underestimated.

“Barbados has pioneered a technology and an innovation that can change how transportation is approached in the Caribbean, and I want Barbados not to take that for granted,” Cummins added.
